How Long Does Fentanyl Stay in Your System

How Long Does Fentanyl Stay in Your System Addiction Drug Use Opioids Print How Long Does Fentanyl Stay in Your System? Brand names for oral applications of fentanyl include Abstral, Actiq, Fentora, and Onsolis, which are lozenges, films, and tablets. Fentanyl transdermal patches include brand names Duragesic and Ionsys. Fentanyl is a Schedule II controlled substance in the United States, meaning that it has accepted medical use and a high potential for addiction. Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. If you arent sure how much you are taking, it can be very easy to overdose. The average lethal dose of fentanyl is only 2mg. New fentanyl analogs that are more potent than fentanyl have also been found in use. While fentanyl is not tested for on standard drug tests, it is tested for by specific employers. In 2017, 28,400 people died from overdoses involving synthetic opioids other than methadone, according to the CDC.?? The CDC goes on to cite the National Center for Health Statistics, stating that 29% of all drug overdose deaths in 2016 mentioned fentanyl, a 1045% increase from 2012. How Long Does Fentanyl Stay in Your System? Blood: Up to 2 daysUrine: Up to 3 daysHair: Up to 3 months How Long Does It Take to Feel Effects? Fentanyl is prescribed to opioid-tolerant pain patients as a lozenge or in the form of a transdermal patch, sometimes sold under the brand name Duragesic. The effects of fentanyl may include:?? Relief from painEuphoriaNauseaReduced sex driveShallow breathing The lozenge takes effect within a few hours. With the patch, it can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day to start feeling the effects. Do not apply extra patches if you feel it is not effective right away. How Long Does Fentanyl Last? A 100 microgram patch delivers 100 micrograms of fentanyl per hour, containing 168 hours worth of fentanyl. Fentanyl is mainly broken down in the liver into norfentanyl, with some of both substances broken down by the kidneys. According to one study, norfentanyl can be detected for up to four days after last use.?? Fentanyl can be detected using urine, hair, and blood tests. Drug tests commonly used to detect fentanyl typically employ mass spectrometry, which is also used to test the contents of drug samples by drug checking services. Blood Fentanyl can show up on a blood test between five and 48 hours after the last use. Urine You can test positive for fentanyl on a urine test between one and three days after the last time you used it. This is the most common test used by an employer. Hair Hair tests are less commonly used by employers but can detect fentanyl for up to three months after the last use. False Positive Testing The presence of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can trigger a false positive for fentanyl. Let your testing agency know if you have recently taken Benadryl if they are going to be testing you for opiates. If you have been prescribed fentanyl and have to take a urine drug screen, it is also wise to disclose this to the testing lab.   Factors That Affect Detection Time While none of these factors substantially impact how long a person has to stop using before a drug test in order to test negative, how long fentanyl is present in the body depends on several factors. Dose The more fentanyl in the body, the longer it will take to fully be eliminated from the body.?? Metabolism Impaired renal or liver function will lead to slower metabolism of fentanyl. Source of Pain Patients taking fentanyl to help manage pain for severe burns may experience faster clearance of the drug than others as a result of increased cardiac output and hepatic blood flow, according to a 2017 study.?? Localization of the Patch Differences in thickness of the skin and subcutaneous fat in various places on the body mean that the rate of absorption of fentanyl is different depending on where the patch is placed. A patch applied to the legs will absorb less efficiently than on the arms, which means the elimination of the drug will also be slower. How to Get Fentanyl Out of Your System Drinking lots of water, exercising, and other elimination myths will not help you get fentanyl or other opiates out of your system to beat a drug test. The only way to get fentanyl out of your system is to stop taking the drug and allow your body time to metabolize and eliminate it.?? If you want to get fentanyl out of your system because you feel you have taken too much and you do not want to be at risk for a respiratory arrest, seek medical attention immediately. While naloxone will not actually remove fentanyl from your system, administering it will block the opiate receptors in the body, causing you to go into withdrawal. This is unpleasant but definitely preferable to an overdose. Symptoms of Overdose Fentanyl can have dangerous cross-reactions with Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, and alcohol, which amplify the depressing effects on the central nervous system. The following are symptoms of an overdose from an opiate such as fentanyl:?? Fingernails and lips turn blue or purplish blackPulse (heartbeat) is slow, erratic, or not there at allNon-responsive to outside stimulusAwake, without the ability to speakLoss of consciousnessVery slow, shallow, erratic, or stopped breathingThe skin of darker-skinned people looks grayish or ashen and the skin tone of lighter-skinned people looks bluish purpleVomitingMaking a snore-like gurgling noise or death rattle, choking soundsBody is limpFace is pale or clammy Understanding Opioid Overdoses An overdose emergency should be treated immediately with naloxone. Naloxone is available in many pharmacies and from your local health department. If many people in your area are using opiates or drugs purchased illegally that may have been mixed with fentanyl, it is a good idea to carry naloxone. You could save a life. Fentanyl is so potent it is highly recommended to not deviate from your prescribed dose, as even a slightly greater amount can dramatically amplify the effects and increase the risk of overdose.?? How to Help Someone If They Overdose on Opioids Getting Help Fentanyl carries a high risk of dependence, even when taken as prescribed. If you suddenly stop taking fentanyl, you may experience opioid withdrawal symptoms, such as anxiety, muscle aches and pain, excessive sweating, and insomnia. Withdrawal can begin six to 30 hours after your last dose and last for up to 10 days. If want to stop taking fentanyl, consult your doctor. When transitioning off of opioids like fentanyl, your doctor may prescribe other medications to ease withdrawal symptoms and prevent breakthrough pain. Opioid addiction may also be treated with other drugs that help shorten and alleviate symptoms of withdrawal. Treatment options for opiate use disorder include:?? Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with buprenorphine or methadoneHarm reduction psychotherapyPrograms designed to help get you off of opiates in a sustainable way If you have chronic pain and are worried about stopping the medication, your health provider can work with you to get access to pain-relief that is less of a problem for your substance use disorder.?? If you are not in a position to stop using or to get into a treatment program, make sure to employ harm reduction methods:?? Dont take more than your prescribed dose.Pursue a safe supply. Always use a prescription rather than purchasing a substance of unknown purity.Seek out a safe space to use where you can be supervised by a professional.Let a loved one who carries and knows how to use naloxone know that you are going to be using. Evaluating A Health Care System And Its Effects On A...

WHO Framework There are four key characteristics to consider when evaluating a health care system and its effects on a population; these characteristics include access, coverage, quality, and safety (WHO, 2015). Since the ACA is in full swing, these four characteristics can be assessed and evaluated to help measure the success of the new health care system. Access is who gets into the system and who doesn’t and how (Boex, 2015). Many will argue that the ACA failed to provide greater access for the American people. The ACA did significantly reduce financial barriers to care, which helped increased access to care; but failed to provide the additional resources (primary care providers, transportation, flexible clinic hours, etc.) needed to gain access to care. Therefore, access has not been well addressed and continues to be an area for improvement for the American health care system. Coverage is what they find when they get there, what is included and excluded and why (Boex, 2015). The ACA succeeded in increasing coverage for the American people. It is estimated that over 32 million Americans will gain coverage through the ACA (Petterson, Liaw, Phillips, Rabin, Meyers, Bazemore, 2012). The coverage aspect was well addressed in the ACA and helps to provide health care coverage for millions of Americans from various economical statuses. 8 Tips to learn to speak Japanese effectively Tip 1: Attend Japanese classes If you are just starting out learning Japanese, I suggest that it is best you attend some basic Japanese courses at a local language school in your country. That is because the foundation of the language is so important that if you screw up in the beginning, it will drag you down when you move forward to the intermediate or advanced classes. You will always have to refer back the materials in the basic classes. We will write a custom essay sample on Japanese Language or any similar topic only for you Order Now I have seen many people suffered from their weak foundation and have to give up learning eventually because they couldn’t cope with the progress of the lessons. Conclusion? At least build a strong foundation by attending basic classes at a school. The native Japanese teacher there can help to correct your mistakes. You will appreciate a lot when you advance to higher levels. Tip 2: Japanese Learning Software I understand many people cannot commit to attend a regular class. Maybe because they have irregular working hours, need to travel overseas frequently due to works, unable to pay the school fees for long terms due to financial issues, or many other personal reasons. In that case, the best alternative is to learn through Japanese learning software like theRocket Japanese, where you can learn to speak Japanese at your own pace and time. This is because it is an online course and therefore you can plan to learn according to your own schedule, anytime, anywhere, so long you have an internet connection. The single reason that I recommend this online software is because it provides one great feature (Rocket Record) that you can use to match your voice to that of the Japanese native’s voice in order to perfect your Japanese pronunciation. While your pronunciation can be corrected by a teacher in a classroom, it’s impossible to know whether your pronunciation is correct if you were to study by yourself. With this recording feature, now you can simply practise speaking Japanese until your pronunciation is perfect, all at your own pace. This is the greatest benefit of using Rocket Japanese. I have also done a review on Rocket Japanese. Do check out the page. Tip 3: Stay in Japan I will say this is by far the most effective way if you really want to accelerate the learning progress. â€Å"Immerse† yourself in the total Japanese environment and you will have a big boost to your speaking ability. You are not only learning Japanese in Japan, you are in fact living and blending in the everyday life of Japan. In such environment, you will be forced to speak Japanese, write Japanese, and even think in Japanese if you need to react fast. If you can stay in this environment for at least a year, your Japanese proficiency will be greatly improved. And that is much faster than study the language in your own country, which doesn’t provide such conducive environment. There are 2 ways, in my opinion, that enable you to move to Japan. 1. Find a job in Japan so that you can stay there for a longer term, say 1 to 2 years. One good option is to join the JET program (The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme) and teach your local language (such as English, etc) in Japan. . If you cannot commit to work in Japan, try enrol and study in a short term language course for at least 3 months. However this is also the most expensive way as the living standard in Japan is considerably high as compare to most countries. Tip 4: Work in a Japanese company This is a great way to learn to speak Japanese for free in your own country while you are working. It might be the next best way if you are unable to go to Japan. The key here is to surround yourself with Japanese-speaking people, natives or non-natives. And a Japanese-speaking environment is the best you can get to improve your language. Depending on your position, if you are lucky, you might get the chance to go to Japan for trainings. Make full use of the opportunity, know some Japanese colleagues and friends over there. Keep in contact with them when you are back home by exchanging emails, communicating using skype or msn, in Japanese of course. If your colleagues or friends want to learn your native language, both parties can then teach each other your own languages, which is beneficial to both of you. This is a more economical way to learn to speak Japanese. Tip 5: Make more Japanese friends If you cannot afford to go to Japan, another way is to know some native Japanese friends in your own country. Check out if there is a Japanese community in the place where you reside in. Get to know the people in the community and learn to speak Japanese with them. These people come to your country due to work or other reasons, so there is a high chance they can speak your native language. Tip 6: Join the activities organized by Japanese Association If there is a Japanese Association near your place, it is wise to join the activities that are organized by the association. The association normally holds many activities to help the locals to learn to speak Japanese. These activities include dialogue sessions with native Japanese, speech contests, Japanese language courses and other cultural activities, aiming to foster the relationship with the local people, as well as helping the locals to appreciate the beauty of the language. Tip 7: Watch Japanese News â€Å"If you cannot listen well, you cannot speak well†. This is the golden rule when learning a new language. Listening is always the â€Å"killing† subject in many languages, especially true in the case of Japanese. I am no exception. Listening has always been my weakest field. In order to overcome this, I make it a point to listen to the news in Japanese everyday. One of the online news sites that I often visit is the TBS News. Over there you can watch the videos and listen to the short summaries of news in Japan. Choose the topic that interest you most, listen to it without first looking at the written script to test how much you can understand. It is very important not to look at the script first so that it will force you to get used to listening the language without reading the content. Another reason is to make you concentrate on the listening part. Repeat listening to the same piece of news for a few times until you are sure that you cannot get anything more from it. You then look at the script and listen to the audio again for another few times to clarify those that you don’t understand. If you can do this continuously for a few months, you will realize that your listening skill improves tremendously. While this is a good method to improve your listening skill, I only recommend you to do this when you reach the advanced level, or at least intermediate level as the scripts are all written in kanji, hiragana and katakana. If not you will have problem understanding the scripts and get overwhelmed and feel demoralized. Tip 8: Watch Japanese Drama Listening to the news trains you on the formal Japanese speaking but you may get bored on the topics. Listening to the drama may be much more relevant because dramas are more related to our everyday life as the actors/actresses speak in more casual way. Similar to watching the news, don’t look at the subtitles while watching the drama because it not only distracts you from listening to the dialogues in the drama, you will grow more dependent on the subtitles and that will do you more harm than good. Conclusion If you can follow some of the tips I mentioned above, I believe they will help you a lot on learning to speak Japanese in a more effective way How to cite Japanese Language, Papers

Virtual Reality in Soccer Training

Recently, there has been an increased demand for the development of sports science. This area is recognized as an academic discipline and as a valid are of professional practice. The use of the technologies allows players to evaluate their performance by looking at the situation from a perspective of a viewer. Specifically virtual reality technologies have gained major recognition in the area of sports games, especially soccer.Advertising We will write a custom proposal sample on Virtual Reality in Soccer Training specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More A variety of new applications and programs are being created for training and educating soccer players to make adequate decisions during the course of the real game. The following work will focus on the analysis of the use of Virtual Reality in the training of soccer players with the evaluation of the practices adopted by particular soccer teams. Science and Soccer In order to evaluate th e most significant sports performance parameters, scientists have come up with a variety of methods and systems. Such systems were developed to evaluate the performance in the areas of physiology, behavioral neuroscience, and biomechanics. The physiological analysis can help in understanding the human movements and their energetic costs; the behavioural neuroscience can evaluate the strategic choices players make during the game while biomechanics can offer dynamic and kinematic data for the optimization of particular movements of the players (Bideau et al. 64). Despite the fact that there has been very little empirical literature that explored the use of virtual reality technologies in field sports, a team of computer scientists from the University of Michigan have created an innovative system for training American football players using such technology. Virtual reality can offer practitioners a variety of exciting opportunities for developing realistic training stimuli in the futu re, but at present there are some technical difficulties, mainly linked to the reduction of the image quality, and practical barriers that are based on the financial aspect that ensure that video remains a preferred method of capturing the performance of players. The main bulk of research has attempted to improve the ability of players to understand the visual cues and a small amount of research have focused on trying to improve other perceptual-cognitive skills such as the ability to recognize patterns of play and to properly predict the probability of likely events.Advertising Looking for proposal on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More When it comes to soccer, Williams has made an attempt to improve the abilities of players with the use of situational probabilities when predicting the destination of a pass in a soccer game. Although the process of the performance review is rather informal, relying mainly on the observation of edited match footage access, there is a scope to include more quantitative information regarding the probabilities associated with the moves and actions typically performed by forthcoming opponents. For instance, an analysis may reveal that the opposition is usually playing in a particular pattern or that the attackers are predictable in the pattern of their movement. Being aware of such points significantly improves the ability of the players to make accurate predictions when it comes to the actions of their opponents. This information can be built ob the basis of training with the use of particular practices and drills (Carling, Reilly and Williams 64). Another question to pose for scientists and practitioners is how should the effectiveness of this type of training be evaluated. The smartest solution to the issue is probably best achieved through the collaborative work of scientists and practitioners. The opinions of coaches could be gleaned before and after train ing by developing behavioral assessment scales whereas a panel of expert coaches could be used to assess anticipation and decision-making skills over a number of matches to improve objectivity and reliability, respectively. The validity of the assessment scales could be substantiated by identifying behavioral indicators of anticipation and decision-making along with quantitative and qualitative video analysis. Moreover, many sports keep seasonal records on various aspects of performance such as the proportion of penalty kicks saved, a number of pass interceptions per match or successful pass completion rates. Although it may be very difficult to apportion improvements directly to the intervention employed, data obtained using these types of records may help substantiate the validity of the training protocol. It may prove much easier to assess training improvements in more ‘closed skill’ situations such as the penalty kick in soccer. In the latter situations, quantitativ e data on success rates usually exist, and components of performance may be examined by using modern measurement technology such as high-speed film analysis (Carling, Reilly and Williams 65). Virtual Reality Advantages Due to the fact that there are technological limitations in software and hardware, the video playback method has been the most successful and simple method in exploring players’ behavior in a sports game, especially soccer. However, the video playback method is only limited to the viewpoint of the camera during the actual recording which results in the lack of interactivity. Virtual reality (VR) is the method of overcoming the limitations the video playback method has by offering a virtual environment with the numerical simulations (Bideau et al. 64). The concept of Virtual Reality designates a system of techniques and principles used in the design and creation of software that will change the way a person perceives the surrounding reality (Lacrama and Fera 137 ).Advertising We will write a custom proposal sample on Virtual Reality in Soccer Training specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More An important advantage of the Virtual Environment analysis is its interaction with objects in real time. Furthermore, there are devices that capture the body of the player in motion. An example of such a VR environment is the MASCARET platform designed to help soccer players practice and learn the tactics decisions during the situations close to the environment of the game. To mimic the decision-making process of professional soccer players in a real game situation, the developers of the platform created avatars. The avatars then were used for training the beginner soccer players to make practical tactical decisions by the means of presenting the tactical problems. However, the limitation of the platform was in the fact that it required a soccer player to imitate an action rather than demonstrate a particula r skill or movement required in a soccer game. According to Pasco, â€Å"Using VR technology in physical activity setting is new and is considered having great potential. One advantage of using VR is to eliminate the risk of injuries in physical training. Another advantage is to provide learners with the information that is not readily visible or available when learning in the real world, but that can play an important role in learning† (434). The VR Process Sherman and Craig defined Virtual Reality as â€Å"a medium composed of interactive computer simulation that senses the participant’s position and actions and replaces or augments the feedback to one or more senses, giving the feeling of being mentally immersed or present in the simulation (a virtual world)† (qtd. in Krieger 1). The analysis of the player’s performance in soccer (or other sports game) with the use of VR can be divided into three steps. The first step in this analysis is connected with the action of capturing the movements of the player in a soccer game. These actions not only create a basis for the animation of virtual players but also offer a way to compare the actions of the player in created and real situations. The second step is connected with the creation of the animations and their assimilation to particular constraints in case some modifications will be required. Lastly, the third step in the VR analysis is linked to the actual presentation of the virtual environment (Bideau et al. 64). AZ Alkmaar Experience Nowadays soccer is taking a major role in the exploration of the player’s Virtual Reality training and the analysis of their potential. An example for this is the fact that the Dutch Eredivise team AZ Alkmaar has signed a contract with a company that specializes in the reconstruction of matches in the virtual reality environment. Furthermore, Beyond Sports has also offered an option of creating a training program on the basis of the simulated matches with the use of the Oculus Rift technology (Barker par. 2).Advertising Looking for proposal on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The team now is planning to put a focus on the Beyond Sports’ technology for the further development of their youth program. The technology will allow analyzing soccer matches on a completely innovative level. Soccer players are able to view the games from an individual perspective as well as gain new knowledge on the level that will not be possible without the technology. Thus, players will learn to criticize themselves which is an important skill in soccer (Barker par. 3). The Beyond Sports technology will create custom training scenarios side by side with the team coaches. Such interactive training scenarios will be used to educate players in accordance with the tactical ideas of their coaches (â€Å"Beyond Sports† par. 4). Every soccer coach will say that even if the player has the most outstanding physical abilities, bad decision-making can crack the successful soccer career aspirations. With the use of the new VR technologies, the participants of the youth progra m will not only be technically savvy but also will be trained in the decision-making process and offer young players a more versatile set of skills. Conclusion The Virtual Reality technologies offer a variety of training option in a motivational and purposeful contexts (Birrer 1). Computer technologies have made a great impact on the majority of aspects of human life. Furthermore, their influence is evident in the organization of major soccer tournaments. Such technologies have also influenced the commercial component of the game. The further technological developments should benefit for soccer coaching, coach education and entertainment at home (Reilly and Williams 282). There is no soccer coach that will argue with the fact that the decision-making aspect of the game is as important as the physical one. And while the advances in technologies that offer the option of Virtual Reality will never replace the hard work on a soccer pitch, if used in balance with each other, the results will be incredible (Rappaport par. 13). American Genre Painting essays

American Genre Painting essays American genre painting can invariably be equated with prominent names such as John Singleton Copley, Washington Allston, and William Sydney Mount. Throughout our history genre painting has been a male-dominated scene. This notion not only applies to the artist, but also to the context of many famous genre paintings. However, as time progressed, women began to play a larger role in genre painting; both as artists and subjects. In an article entitled "Full of Home, Love and Simplicity," Elizabeth Johns discusses women's role in genre painting both as artist and subject. Regarding the subject, Johns addresses several patterns in the female role. The first being that women are absent in many historically important genre paintings. Likewise, when women are present, they play a "subsidiary" role, as in the painting "Bargaining for a Horse" by William Sydney Mount. Mount's painting depicts two men conversing next to a horse in the foreground while the only woman in the painting is placed in the far background, barely noticeable. Furthermore, Johns feels that in some cases images of women in genre paintings are even critical. Using a second Mount painting titled "Cider Making," Johns argues that the female in line for cider is seemingly "forced to wait her turn." In addition to these patterns, Johns noted the idea of "separate spheres" proposed by Harriet Martineau, a famous 19th-century writer. These spheres represent ideologies of masculinity and femininity. Johns feels that women are "undifferentiated" in many genre paintings. These include two works by William Sydney Mount entitled "Rustic Dance After a Sleigh Ride" and "The Sportsman's Last Visit." In both paintings, Johns claims that the women are painted plainly and without character, while the men are distinctly portrayed. Although these patterns were evident in many famous works, they began to subside by the late 1840's. It was around this time that painters such as Tomp...

Hipparchus the Astronomer, Geographer, Mathematician

Hipparchus the Astronomer, Geographer, Mathematician If youve studied math at a high school level, you probably have experience with trigonometry. Its a fascinating branch of mathematics, and it all came about through the genius of Hipparchus of Rhodes. Hipparchus was a Greek scholar considered the greatest astronomical observer in early human history. He made many advances in geography and mathematics, specifically in trigonometry, which he used to construct models to predict solar eclipses. Because math is  the language of science, his contributions are particularly important.   Early Life Hipparchus was born around 190 BCE in Nicaea, Bithynia (now known as now Iznik, Turkey). His early life is mostly a mystery, but what we do know about him comes from Ptolemys Almagest. He  is mentioned in other writings as well. Strabo, a Greek geographer and historian who lived around 64 BCE to 24 AD called Hipparchus one of the famous men of Bithynia. His image, usually depicted sitting and looking at a globe, has been found on many coins minted between 138 AD and 253 AD. In ancient terms, thats a pretty important acknowledgment of importance. Hipparchus apparently traveled and wrote extensively. There are records of observations he made in his native Bithynia as well as from the  island of Rhodes and the Egyptian city of Alexandria. The only example of his writing that  still exists is his Commentary on Aratus and Eudoxus. Its  not one of his major writings, but its still important because it gives us an insight into his work. Life Achievements Hipparchuss major love was mathematics and he pioneered a number of ideas we take for granted today: the division of a circle into 360 degrees and the creation of one of the first trigonometric tables for solving triangles. In fact, he very likely invented the precepts of trigonometry. As an astronomer, Hipparchus was curious about using his knowledge of the Sun and stars to calculate important values. For example, he derived the length of the year to within 6.5 minutes. He also discovered the precession of the equinoxes, with a value of 46 degrees, which is fairly close to our modern number of 50.26 degrees. Three hundred years later, Ptolemy only came up with a figure of 36. The precession of the equinoxes refers to the gradual shift in Earths rotation axis. Our planet wobbles like a top as it spins, and over time, this means that the poles of our planet slowly shift the direction in which they point in space. Its why our north star changes throughout a 26,000-year cycle. Right now the north pole of our planet points to Polaris, but in the past, it has pointed to Thuban and Beta Ursae Majoris. Gamma Cepheii will become our pole star in a few thousand years. In 10,000 years, it will be Deneb, in Cygnus, all due to the precession of the equinoxes. Hipparchuss calculations were the first scientific effort to explain the phenomenon. Hipparchus also charted the stars in the sky seen with the naked eye. While his star catalog does not survive today, it is believed that his charts included around 850 stars. He also made a careful study of the motions of the Moon. Its unfortunate that more of his writings do not survive. It seems clear that the work of many who followed was developed using the groundwork laid by Hipparchus. Although little else is known about him, it is probable that he died around 120 BC most likely in Rhodes, Greece. Recognition In honor of Hipparchuss efforts to measure the sky and his work in mathematics and geography, the European Space Agency named their HIPPARCOS satellite in reference to his accomplishments. It was the first mission to focus exclusively on astrometry, which is the accurate measurement of stars and other celestial objects in the sky. It was launched in 1989 and spent four years on orbit. Data from the mission have been used in many areas of astronomy and cosmology (the study of the origin and evolution of the universe).   Edited and updated by Carolyn Collins Petersen.

Coming of Age in Mississippi Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Coming of Age in Mississippi Paper - Essay Example Since this kind of racism is a big part of the American experience for African-Americans in the past, it is important to know about it. The book is set during the 1960s as well, when the civil rights movement was in full swing and it was often very dangerous for African-Americans. That makes this book an important read to anyone who wants to know about this time period in America. During her childhood, Anne was named Essie and she grew up in the rural part of Mississippi in Centreville. Her family was poor and the white people they worked for usually did not treat them nicely. In addition she had family problems, as her father was abusive and then abandoned them. Her mother settles down with a new man, but has more children and times are still difficult. From a young age, Anne had to work after school to make sure her family had enough money to eat. At the beginning of the second section, she becomes aware of the horrible things about race in a new way when she hears of a fourteen-ye ar-old black boy being killed. Throughout high school she becomes more and more worried about things like this, being almost obsessed with killings and KKK attacks on other African-Americans. She goes to college after getting a scholarship to play basketball and while she is there she decides to take part in the NAACP. Her family is upset about this because white people threaten Anne and her family because of it. After college Anne becomes a member of something called CORE and goes to try and encourage African-Americans to take a more active part in their civil rights movement. This part of the book really shows the tension between Anne and many of the other characters, as even among the civil rights activists she is seen as sometimes too serious. The book ends with Anne growing unhappy with how the movement is going because nobody's life is really being improved. Coming of Age in Mississippi is a powerful book that really had a big effect on my way of thinking. Although I have grow n up in the American South in Tennessee, Georgia, and Texas and am not white, I have never experienced anything close to the kind of racism that Anne Moody talked about in her autobiography. It was really an eye-opener to me to read from someone who experienced about how bad things were in those days. After reading about her experiences as a high school girl and especially when she was involved in CORE and trying to get African-Americans to vote in Canton, Mississippi, I now look at the slight racism that still exists in America in a new light. It makes me want to take this book and show it to people who just take their lives for granted in the USA. Even though the book is sometimes very upsetting, I did find myself enjoying it a lot. The author is a very good writer and knowing that she really went through everything in the book made it very easy to get into and forget what time it was. This is hard to do. The things I liked the most about the book was the way that Moody did not sh y away from using strong language if that was what the people it represented would have used. For instance, when Anne finds out about the murder of fourteen-year-old Emmet Till at the beginning of chapter ten, the boys she is with swear quite a lot because they're angry with her for not paying more attention to her own community. This also makes us see Anne's character as a more real person, because she is not trying to pretend that she

Write a 500 word paper which discusses the complexities of Red Chalk Assignment

Write a 500 word paper which discusses the complexities of Red Chalk media and which gives detailed examples of at least one artist (Leonardo Da Vinci) who used this media. Remember to cite references - Assignment Example l paintings, as when Geurcino used this medium fro a study in preparation for the monumental oil painting ‘Erminia Finding the Wounded Tancred’ ( circa 1660), but red chalk was also used to make decorative and quite elaborate landscapes. The writer goes on to state that red chalk became very popular during the Rocco period in France and was utilized This particular technique can be used to exercise great control and precision. It is very easy to use , no mixing of colours, preparation of pigments etc., and gives a rapid result, using simple strokes. That of course does not mean that it does not also require great skill. A famous picture in red chalk is usually referred to as Renaissance man is often credited as being a self -portrait by Leonardo Da Vinci, although it is perhaps a portrait of a relative of his. Scholars are in dispute about this. It dates from 1512 and is held at the Biblioteca Reale in Turin, Italy ( Daily Mail, 2009). It is rarely on public view simply because it is so fragile, because it is subject to foxing, yet at the same time it is often copied and so well known. There has recently been developed a special box, a Climabox, which will, it is believed, preserve the wonderful portrait from further deterioration. Mayhew ( undated ) has spent a great deal of time researching the various materials used by early artists. He describes it as a natural material and easy to cut into sticks right from the earth as it was already very compressed. He states that da Vinci was the first artist to use it. However supplies became depleted by the end of the 17th century and so it dropped from popularity. By 1795 an artificial substitute had been developed by Frenchman Nicholas Conte, but Mayhew states that this ‘crayon’ simply doesn’t have the ‘glow’ of the natural product, and is harder to work with. He quotes Edward Burne-Jones as being in despair as he asks every colour man for the rare original, and saying ‘Now the

Companies Should Support Local Communities :: Argumentative Persuasive Argument Essays

Companies Should Support Local Communities In a series of films, Michael Moore presents the fact that some people are greedy with their money. In his first film, Roger and Me, Moore tries to get Roger Smith, President of G.M., to visit Flint, Michigan, so he can see how closing a factory, where 30,000 people used to work, affects a community. (Smith closed eleven factories in America, opened new factories in Mexico and paid the workers $.70 an hour, so he could personally profit.) Moore wants Roger Smith, to be aware of how his actions hurt a society and instead of using the money to enrich himself he should assist those in his own community. In Moore’s second film Pets or Meat: The Return to Flint, not much had changed in Flint. Many people remained unemployed. As for Smith, he did make profits from Mexico but didn't use his money to better the community as suggested in the cartoon. Instead Smith continued to negatively affect the families that were once comfortable with their jobs and education. Their lives were continuing to slide down the occupational hierarchy, some even ending with poverty (Newman). Alter Jonathan stated in his essay, "The divide between rich and poor in the United States is now greater than at any time since the Great Depression. The richest 2.7 million Americans now have as much income as the poorest 100 million. These trends are being driven by technology." I agree that technology does affect this trend, but it is also due to people like Roger Smith who choose to ignore the importance of bettering American communities, and instead choose to indulge themselves with excess profit by taking a dvantage of those in foreign countries. By the time Moore’s third film, The Big One, came out many more companies were falling into Roger Smith's footsteps. Finally, however, Moore was able to get his message across to the CEO of Nike, Phil Night. Night took the advice of the father (Moore) and donated a mere $10,000 of his profits, to a school in Flint. Getting the message across to Night, however, was not easy. Moore was very persistent and had to repeatedly appeal to Night, much like Jo Goodwin Parker does in the essay What is Poverty? Parker gives a first hand description of poverty and in practically every sentence describes how poverty is dirt, it is asking for help knowing it won't get you far, and it is always being tired and hungry.

Identify the Main Factors Shaping the Structure of an Organisation Essay

The structure of an organisation refers to the pattern of relationships that exists between different parts of the business and between the different people who work within it. Organisations are structured in a variety of ways, dependant on their objectives and culture. The wrong organisation structure will hinder the success of the business. Internal factors such as size, product and skills of the workforce influence the organizational structure. As a business expands the chain of command will lengthen and the spans of control will widen. The higher the level of skill each employee has the more the business will make use of the matrix structure to maximize these skills across the organization. A Matrix structure organisation contains teams of people created from various sections of the business. These teams will be created for the purposes of a specific project and will be led by a project manager. Often the team will only exist for the duration of the project and matrix structures are usually deployed to develop new products and services. The advantages of a matrix include – Individuals can be chosen according to the needs of the project. – The use of a project team which is dynamic and able to view problems in a different way as specialists have been brought together in a new environment. – Project managers are directly responsible for completing the project within a specific deadline and budget. In adopting a Matrix structure could entail some disadvantages which may include – A conflict of loyalty between line managers and project managers over the allocation of resources. If teams have a lot of independence can be difficult to monitor. – Costs can be increased if more managers (ie project managers) are created through the use of project teams. Organisational structures should aim to maximize the efficiency and success of the Organisation. An effective organisational structure will facilitate working relationships between various sections of the organisation. It will retain order and command whilst promoting flexibility and creativity

Time Management Issues Start Becoming A More Organized...

Time Management Issues How often do you hear the words â€Å"time management†? In the last few years, these words are progressively touching the lives each of us. Each of us in a professional or personal life has a huge amount of things that need to be done. Time management helps us to organize and plan our daily activities, such as job projects or homework assignments. Having the time management skills can help you become more effective and successful person. The first possible solution to the problem of time management issues is start becoming a more organized person. Is it achievable to become an organized person? I would say yes. It is a great skill that you can learn, just like you learn how to drive a car. At first time it is difficult, but each time it turns easier, like you always knew how to drive a car. The same way with the organization skills. Of course organization takes time, but when you will get it like your habit, your life becomes really easier. First of all, you should keep everything in its place. Whether it’s your home or your office, you need to be able to find everything what you want quickly. For example, your study binder. How often do you have distress looking for one specific paper inside your binder? One year ago I had a problem like that and it took me a long time to find something. Now, it takes me about 10 seconds because I am separating all of the papers by class, subject and week.
